The CICA scheme is set up to pay out compensation for four different types of damages and injury related to a criminal incident:

  • – Physical or sexual abuse.
  • – Physical and mental injury related to the incident.
  • – Fatalities related to violent crimes.
  • – Special Expenses Payments, which are considered if you have been incapacitated or unable to work for more than 28 weeks due to the incident.

It’s worth noting that the above notes are over simplified and there are many exceptions which can be considered.

This means that not every type of injury may be looked at for compensation and not all claims will be successful. Additionally, claimants need to fulfil certain requirements to be able to submit a claim in the first place.

The amount to be compensated by CICA is often taken from a table of injuries with the compensation amount already established. However with Special Expense Payments it’s for the claimant to calculate loss of earnings, a difficult task perhaps, but we can assist in calculating this for you and ensuring no relevant expenses are missed out, which might otherwise reduce the value of the claim.

Every case is unique and we can only offer specific advice once we have been able to review the full case notes.
